John Abernethy

PhD student at Liverpool John Moores University

I am a PhD student at Liverpool John Moores University looking at the influence of forest structure on orangutan desities, distributions, nesting and travel paths in Sumatra. I developed a love of nature and the environment from a young age and since starting university I've been fortunate enough to conduct field work across the globe including South Africa, Borneo, Kenya, Peru and the UK. My previous research as also been as diverse as the countries I've worked in, from niche separation in caiman, prey detection and travel in burying beetles and the influence of street lighting on lesser horseshoe bat foraging and ranging behaviours.

Research interests

My research interests are in the influence of the environment and how changes to it whether anthropogenic or natural in origin can affect a species ecology and conservation, currently this has led to my work with Sumatran orangutans and how changes in forest structure influence their densities and distributions, nest site selection and travel paths in Sumatra.

Interests and Hobbies Outside Science:

Outside of science my main passions are photography and scuba diving though I have recently gotten into blog writing and currently write about my research, travels and the places I've been and people I've met.
