Get involved in our research

Within LEAP we are always looking for MRes, dissertation project students or placement students and interns who are able to go to the field for at least six months or want to support data analyses at Bournemouth University (BU).

Please contact Amanda Korstjens or Ross Hill (akorstjens @ bournemouth.ac.uk - without the spaces) directly if you are interested in joining LEAP for the MRes, a self-funded PhD, or to look for postdoctoral research funding together (e.g. we supported the successful Marie Curie Fellowship application of Dr Cici Alexander and all funding applications of our students through professional training and 1:1 support).

We can also take project students from other universities who want to work on one of our projects (with their own funding and long-fieldwork periods).

We will advertise funded opportunities via the News pages and twitter and this page when they become available.

Masters by Research - MRes in Wildlife Conservation

Currently we have opportunities for Masters by Research, MRes projects in primatology or wildlife conservation.

Bournemouth University offers a 1-year research degree at Masters level that allows you to focus on your research project. At LEAP we always welcome new students. Start dates are typically in January and September each year.

We offer projects that include field work or those that are entirely desk-based.

Please get in touch in the first instance with Prof. Korstjens (akorstjens @ bournemouth.ac.uk - remove the spaces), or any other academic within our Department of Life and Environmental Sciences.

Together with your potential supervisors you then design a project that suits your and our research interests and your career aspirations. Once the proposal ideas are well-developed, you can apply through the university system.

The MRes degree has very few mandatory classes but you can often sit in on our various MSc-level classes to develop specific skills. The MRes is assessed through a viva examination.

Our department also runs a more traditional MSc in Biodiversity Conservation. and a fully online MSc in Green Economy.

Field research projects for undergraduates & postgraduates

Currently we have opportunities for mostly Master's level field work as part of ongoing research in Sikundur, Sumatra, Indonesia.

In exceptional cases we may take on placement students, volunteers, or interns who are sufficiently experienced.

You can join any of the ongoing projects or develop a new one based on your expertise/ interest.

Postdoctoral research opportunities

Amanda Korstjens and Ross Hill are keen to work with postdocs on funding applications for fellowships and research as part of LEAP. Bournemouth University provides professional training and Amanda and Ross work closely together with the postdoc to prepare the strongest project proposals possible.

In 2015 we were successful in obtaining a prestigious EU Horizon 2020 Marie Curie fellowship with Cici Alexander who has now started her work.

If you are keen to develop ideas together and have a strong research record and strong work ethics, you can contact either Amanda or Ross to discuss opportunities that suit our and your expertise, interests and strengths.
